The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California

Metropolitan has various internship opportunities to train, educate and prepare pre-professionals.  College undergraduates and graduate students will gain practical work experience through a paid temporary job assignment related to their academic/educational field of study.  Interns learn about the water industry while applying theories and concepts to "real-world" work situations.  Please read the details below for more information about our internship programs.

General Internships

Job Duties:

Perform research as assigned and apply academic theory, training and education to real life work situations and environments
  • Participate on project teams as needed
  • Learn and assist with tasks related to areas of discipline and assigned area of responsibility    
  • Learn and assist with planning, conducting studies/research and compiling information from various sources; provide updates and prepare reports
  • Learn and assist with collecting and analyzing statistical data; generate and maintain records and report findings; make recommendations ​​
Terms and Conditions: ​ 
  • ​Participation in MWD's Internship Program does not automatically guarantee full-time employment;
  • MWD does not provide benefits, vacation pay, holiday pay, or overtime pay for Student Interns; 
  • ​ All Student Interns must adhere to MWD's dress guidelines and observe all safety rules and regulations at all times.

Engineering Co-Op Internships

Metropolitan's Engineering Services Group designs and manages the construction of water-related structures and facilities, including pipelines, water treatment facilities, operations centers, hydropower plants, reservoirs and numerous regulating structures. 


Metropolitan's internships are designed to augment the students' studies with practical work experience at Metropolitan.  Engineering offers two internships – Summer and Year-Round.  Students can apply for either or both internships.


All students who meet the requirements, regardless of the school they are currently attending, are encouraged to apply.  Metropolitan partners with Cal Poly Pomona Foundation to administer this internship.

Water Quality Co-Op Internships

Metropolitan's Water Quality Section utilizes modern technology and laboratory techniques to ensure water provided to the public is safe and complies with or exceeds regulatory standards.  They conduct chemical and biological analyses, optimize treatment processes and test new methodologies to assure water quality conforms to changing standards.   

This internship program designed for students who want to obtain paid practical work experience while pursuing a degree.

All students who meet the requirements, regardless of the school you are currently attending, are encouraged to apply.  Please note these internships are located at our Weymouth treatment facility.
