Water Protection
For more than 80 years, Metropolitan has been Southern California's provider of high quality, reliable drinking water. Metropolitan meets or exceeds all federal and state drinking water regulations. Watershed protection, more advanced treatment technologies, increased monitoring and more stringent regulations and guidelines have worked together to protect the quality of water delivered to the consumer.

Source waters used by Metropolitan – the Colorado River and State Water Project – have water quality challenges due to exposure to urban/stormwater runoff, recreational activities, wastewater discharges, wildlife, fires, and other factors. Metropolitan invests resources to support improved watershed protection programs.

Metropolitan annually tests its water for more than 400 constituents and performs more than 250,000 water quality tests. Samples are collected from source waters, treatment plant effluents (water that has been through the treatment and disinfection processes) and throughout the vast distribution system.

Metropolitan's water quality laboratory is a state-of-the-art, 58,000-square-foot facility located in La Verne. The laboratory's primary purpose is to safeguard the drinking water served to nearly 19 million Southern California residents. There are five satellite facilities at the treatment plant, in addition to the central laboratory, that also provides water testing and monitoring.

A highly trained staff of scientists, technicians, and engineers with specialties in chemistry, microbiology, limnology (the study of rivers and lakes) and process engineering regularly test samples of water and conduct research to improve detection methods, quality, and treatment efficiency.

EPA-approved and cutting-edge methods are used for the detection of bacteria, viruses, parasites, chemical contaminants and other toxins.  Monitoring also safeguards against disinfection byproducts formed during the treatment process, radioactive contaminants such as uranium, and invasive species including the quagga mussel.
